Zoran Zaev assumes office as Macedonia's new PM

The new Prime Minister of Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, took over Thursday duties from the outgoing premier, Emil Dimitriev.

"At a ceremony to hand over the prime ministerial office, the outgoing premier Emil Dimitriev and I discussed all the necessary details that I need to know according to protocol and in line with the provisions," Zaev, who was accompanied by several members of the SDSM-led coalition government, told reporters.

"I'm glad the handover took place in a friendly atmosphere, because it sends a positive message to the citizens that regardless of the current political circumstances, our political stances and oftentimes different political views, it's clear we are going to need each other to work for the citizens, for the country and everything else that is in their interest," stressed Zaev.

Congratulating Macedonia on having a new government, PM Zaev urged politicians to govern the country 'wisely' and solely in the interest of the citizens.

Earlier in the day, the newly-appointed ministers were welcomed by President Gjorge Ivanov in his cabinet.

The new government of Macedonia was elected by MPs late on Wednesday with 62 votes in favor, 44 against and five in abstention.

The new government is made up of 25 ministers.

Handover ceremonies are being held in most of the ministries throughout the day.
