Prime Minister Gruevski meets with Macedonian Americans in New Jersey

Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski met with members of the Macedonian diaspora in New Jersey, which is the home of one of the largest communities of Macedonians living in the United States. The meeting with the diaspora is a traditional part of the visit of Macedonian politicians to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Prime Minister Gruevski told the hundreds of leading Macedonians from New Jersey that the Government will continue to develop its cooperation with the diaspora across the world. Grueski expressed his gratitude to the members of the diaspora for the financial remittances which help support members of their extended families in Macedonia, estimated to account for about a tenth of the Macedonian gross domestic product. Even more, Gruevski said, the diaspora is a bridge between Macedonia and the world, helping bring investments, education opportunities, modernizing developments and cultural cooperation with the native country.

"I'm grateful for the support you extend to us whenever you can, for lobbying on our behalf and spreading the good word about Macedonia. It is not only important to have Macedonia heard in the United Nations or in the White House, it is equally important to speak about Macedonia's achievements across the world", Gruevski told the the assembled Macedonian Americans.

Gruevski added that the Macedonian Government is working on a number of projects that are beneficial to the Macedonian diaspora, namely to allow them easier access to documents such as passports and solving administrative issues they face. Macedonia also allowed Macedonian citizens the right to vote in general and Presidential elections, beginning in 2011, with the diaspora electing three members of Parliament. Prime Minister Gruevski also spoke about the other reforms on-going in Macedonia.

"I'm glad that the Prime Minister and other representatives of our Government came to visit us here. This is not the first time they come to New Jersey, and it won't be the last. I hope these visits are more frequent and bring us closer together, knowing that our Government thinks about us as much as we think about Macedonia. We promote our country as much as we can, we bring other Americans to visit Macedonia, we discuss our culture", said Nikola Poposki, a high school teacher living in New Jersey.

Goran Mitevski, a business owner from the state, added that main focus is put on bringing American investments in Macedonia. "The Macedonian community in the tri-state New York City area is giving its best to establish contacts with businessmen and to enable them to invest in Macedonia", Milevski said.
