Macedonian folk dance “Kopachka” inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list

Original, male social folk dance “Kopachka” has impressive rhythmical and dance characteristics that symbolises the tilling the soil, tradition and unity of the Macedonian nation. Transmitted from generation to another generation as spiritual treasure of a nation testifies for its existence, Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska – Milevska said Sunday on the occasion of inscription of Macedonian folk dance “Kopachka” on representative list of the UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

We consider that through “Kopachka” we can present our rich ethnochoreology tradition and priceless folklore treasure to the world. Macedonian folk dances have important place in the Macedonian folklore and music traditions and that’s why much attention was paid to dossier of the Macedonian folk dance “Kopachka”, Kanceska – Milevska said.

She said that the inscription of “Kopachka” is a result of team work by Ministry of Culture and Macedonian National Commission for UNESCO, Bureau for Cultural Heritage Protection, Institute for Folklore “Marko Cepenkov” – Skopje in cooperation with the local self-government of Delcevo and “Kopachka” folk dance group.

One year ago UNESCO inscribed the celebration of the Holy Forty Martyrs in Stip which was of great importance for our country, because Macedonia once again legitimated own culture, tradition and identity in international frameworks, she said.
Delcevo mayor Darko Sehtanski said that the inscription of “Kopachka” on representative list of the UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage is of large importance not only for the natives of Delcevo but in general for the citizens of Macedonia.

By success of verification of this intangible cultural heritage, the diversity and uniqueness of Macedonian tradition is confirmed which was built through rich historical past of the Macedonian people, Sehtanski said.

Macedonian folk dance “Kopachka” several days ago was inscribed on representative list of the UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity, UNESCO informs. "Kopachka" is a dynamic and energetic social dance that is danced by the local residents from the village of Dramche, Pijanec.
