Government to implement phytosanitary reform

The government has adopted amendments to several laws in connection to phytosanitary measures in order to improve and control the quality of seeds, to protect farmers and the health of citizens.

"An array of laws is being changed in a bid to improve the protection of seed and fertilizer quality thus preventing anyone from making economic damage to farmers or putting the health of citizens at risk by using inadequate phytosanitary products," government spokesman Aleksandar Gjorgiev told Saturday's press conference.

The changes envisage regular and frequent phytosanitary inspections to be made with precisely determined methods. Laboratories where seeds are analysed need to be internationally accredited by 1 January 2015.

They also envisage increased fines and stricter prison sentences for manufacturers or traders of seeds who have broken the laws.
