Poposki-Mrkic: Macedonia, Serbia to cooperate towards EU accession

Macedonia and Serbia are tied by traditional friendship and sincere relations, as well as a common goal - EU integration. In this regard, countries' Foreign Ministers Nikola Poposki and Ivan Mrkic signed Monday in Skopje an agreement for cooperation in Euro-integration.

"The countries aim towards launching EU accession talks as soon as possible, resulting from the achieved reforms, and supported by all Union member-states", said FM Poposki at the joint press conference.

According to him, Macedonia and Serbia are tied by many aspects and the countries are interested in close cooperation towards infrastructure links and joint promotion at third markets.

"We are committed on this path, hoping such approach would be a model for all neighbors, including those within and outside the EU", added Poposki.

Talks also tackled regional cooperation, primarily within the SEE Cooperation Process, which is currently chaired by Macedonia.

Poposki said there are open issues in the region, but they should be overcome in a sincere way.

FM Mrkic highlighted the excellent Belgrade-Skopje relations, taking into consideration the recent meetings between the countries' Presidents and Prime Ministers, which represent an additional encouragement for future cooperation.

"Regional initiatives are rehearsals for our future goal - EU membership. The more we rehearse, the more efficient we will be when joining the European family", added Mrkic.

He said a date for a joint session of the countries' governments has been set. Interlocutors also focused on parliamentary cooperation and the establishment of a committee on economic cooperation.

Serbian FM Mrkic will also meet President Gjorge Ivanov and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski later in the day.
