Minister Poposki Takes Part in 67th UN General Assembly Session in New York

As part of his activities centered around the General Debate at the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, Nikola Poposki, delivered an address yesterday at the High-Level Meeting on the Rule of Law hosted by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.

In his address, Minister Poposki spoke about the importance of the principle of rule of law in the international context. In continuation, he called upon all UN member states to honour and implement the decisions of the International Court of Justice, underlining the need for strengthening the role of the Court and welcoming the efforts of the UN Secretary-General aimed at increasing the number of countries accepting its mandatory jurisdiction.

At the margins of the General Debate, during the day, Minister Poposki had a series of bilateral meetings with a number of his foreign colleagues.

On that occasion, Minister Poposki had a meeting with his Greek counterpart Avramopoulos. The meeting between the two Ministers was of an introductory nature and went ahead in a courteous atmosphere.

At the meeting that Minister Poposki had with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, Al Sabah, the two colleagues discussed the potentials for intensifying the economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as the possibilities for increasing the number of Kuwaiti investments in the Republic of Macedonia. In that context, Minister Poposki presented to his Kuwaiti counterpart the advantages of starting a business in the Republic of Macedonia, discussing, as well, the possibility for business delegations from Macedonia and Kuwait paying visits to the two countries. The two Ministers positively reacted to the possibility for the two countries signing a Memorandum of Cooperation which would provide a solid basis for intensifying their cooperation even further. At the meeting, Minister Poposki and Minister Al Sabah also discussed the potentials for intensifying the diplomatic communication between Macedonia and Kuwait.

In New York, Minister Poposki also had his first ever meeting with his South Sudanese colleague, Minister Nhial, which, at the same time, was the first meeting in history between senior officials of the two countries. On that occasion, Minister Poposki discussed with his colleague the possibilities for strengthening and diversifying the bilateral cooperation with the last country to be admitted to UN membership.
