Environment Minister, Ambassadors join campaign "Macedonia without Waste 2012"

Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Abdilaqim Ademi, EU Ambassador Aivo Orav, Slovenian Ambassador Alain Brian Bergant, and Swedish Ambassador Lars Wahlund joined Saturday in waste cleaning activities in Kisela Voda municipality, in the framework of campaign "Macedonia without Waste 2012".

The event is held within campaign "Macedonia without Waste 2012", part of the global waste cleaning campaign "Let's Do It! World 2012", officially supported by the European Parliament.

"Besides cleaning Macedonia from waste, the campaign aims at raising the awareness among citizens about the environment issues. Without this awareness, all campaigns and activities cannot succeed", stressed Minister Ademi.

Deputy-Environment Minister Stevo Temelkovski, who is campaign's coordinator, said the central event will be held on October 6, whereas cleaning activities would involve all municipalities.

Ambassador Orav said today's campaign was the start of Macedonia's cleaning.

"This event is important for the awareness raising among citizens. We hope there will be no need to come here and clean again in the future", said Orav.

Ambassador Bergant said Slovenia has organized such campaigns on two occasions, involving about 270,000 people, including the President, MPs, military, police, students etc.

Ambassador Wahlund voiced hope that citizens' awareness would increase and they would refrain from throwing waste in nature.

The cleaning campaign included local citizens, employees in state institutions, NGOs, scouts, whereas the public communal enterprise will transport the collected waste to the Skopje landfill.
