Vice-Premier Arifi: EU membership - Macedonia's strategic goal

Since its independence the European Union membership has been Macedonia's strategic objective, which enjoys the support of all political parties and most important - of citizens, Vice-Premier for European Affairs Teuta Arifi said Tuesday at a European Parliament debate in Brussels.

Hence, the government has set Macedonia's EU accession as its top priority, she said at the debate 'Can 2012 be turned into a year of success?'

Speaking about Macedonia efforts and achievements on the road to EU, Arifi said a new chapter in Skopje-Brussels relations would be opened in 10 days, namely the launch of a high-level dialogue.

"We are aware that it is not a replacement for the accession talks, but nonetheless believe that opening of two key chapters (23 & 24) will enable us to demonstrate our strong commitment to implement the reforms in sensible spheres, such as the judiciary, fundamental rights, freedom and security," Arifi said.

The debate, organized by EP's Macedonia Rapporteur Richard Howitt, brought together MEPs, representatives of the European Commission and Brussels-based think-tank organizations.
