Dimitriev-Zbogar: Report is roadmap for future activities on EU agenda

The 2016 European Commission Progress Report for Macedonia can serve as a roadmap for the activities to be implemented by the new government after the December 11 elections, said Caretaker PM Emil Dimitriev and EU Ambassador Samuel Zbogar after a meeting on Wednesday.

"Macedonia's European agenda remains the country's top priority in the coming period. The remarks noted in the Progress Report represent a fresh roadmap over the future activities. I hope the EU agenda will again be the main priority after the elections and the composition of the new government", said Dimitriev after the meeting, at which Zbogar handed over the Progress Report.

He voiced hope that the new government could focus more on the EU agenda compared to the previous year, when the country faced enormous political challenges and the migrant crisis.

"I hope the elections will create conditions for implementation of the urgent reform priorities that will bring Macedonia closer to the EU, followed by Union accession", said Dimitriev.

Ambassador Zbogar shared the stance that the report could serve as a roadmap for institutions, the Parliament and the Government after the elections.

"I believe the European agenda is the thing that unites all political leaders and forces, all people in the country", he stressed.

Zbogar said the Progress Report includes many recommendations that can be used by institutions when discussing about reforms expected after the elections.

"We see the elections as hope for the beginning of a fresh process within the country, but also from an EU aspect", he added.

Zbogar also thanked Macedonia on behalf of the European Union for the exceptional cooperation in the migrant crisis, expecting it to continue in the future.
