PM Gruevski: Government campaign writes-off EUR 30 million of citizens' debts

A total of EUR 30 million has been written-off within the Government's campaign, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said Thursday in Ohrid.

The few-month campaign, launched in August, called on banks and utility companies to join the one-off scheme to write off the debts of the poorest customers. In return for canceling the debts, the Government offered the companies annual tax breaks.

Writing off the debt was one of the election pledges of PM Gruevski’s VMRO DPMNE party during the last general election, which it won. It was billed as a measure to help people overcome the effects of the global economic crisis.

The successful completion of this campaign means that yet another election promise has been fulfilled, Gruevski told reporters during his visit to Ohrid.
