Meeting with Poposki, MEP Peterle welcomes positive changes in Macedonia

The European Parliament (EP) is satisfied and pleasantly surprised with the positive political changes introduced as regards the political dialogue in Macedonia. The EU’s legislative body expects the changes to be reflected in the progress report, set to be presented tomorrow by the European Commission.

This was concluded Monday by Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki and MEP Alojz Peterle, who also chairs the mixed committee of the European Parliament and Macedonia’s Assembly, MIA’s correspondent reports from Brussels.

According to Poposki, there’s a perception of encouragement amongst the supporters of Macedonia in the EP and the EU in general over the implementation of the political agreement.

“There’s an encouragement amongst our supporters in the European Parliament and also amongst the EU countries by the fact that Macedonia is managing to implement the benchmarks related to the political dialogue. In this way, we also isolate those who are not motivated enough to make progress in the EU integration process and who want to use internal political shortcomings as an excuse,” Minister Poposki told MIA after meeting with the Slovenian MEP.

Peterle, who also served as prime minister of Slovenia, said the good news coming from Macedonia was expected to be reflected into the EC progress report.

Citing positive recent developments in Macedonia, he announced that Skopje in December would host a meeting of the EP-Macedonia Mixed Parliamentary Committee.

“I’m utterly pleased with the positive changes in Macedonia. The Mixed Parliamentary Committee will convene in the first week of December,” MEP Peterle told MIA.

According to the Macedonian FM, Brussels in the coming period will closely follow the implementation of all provisions stemming from the political deal.

Minister Poposki is paying a working visit to Brussels, where on Tuesday he is scheduled to address the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs regarding the migration issue.
