Macedonian and Polish theaters prepare play on child refugees of Aegean Macedonia

On Wednesday Minister of Culture Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska paid a visit to the Macedonian National Theatre (MNT), where rehearsals are taking place for two plays, namely The Disrupted Odyssey and The Master and Margarita.

The Disrupted Odyssey is the working title of a project co-produced by MNT and one of Poland’s leading theatres, Helena Modrzejewska Theatre in Legnicy. It is directed by Jacek Glomb and written by Zagorka Pop Antova Andonovska and Robert Urbanski.

“The play, which will feature 30 actors from Macedonia and Poland, tells the story of the exodus of child refugees from the Aegean part of Macedonia,” Kanceska-Milevska said adding it was expected for the play to be premiered next year.

The Disrupted Odyssey is being prepared by two playwrights from Macedonia and Poland as the project is funded by the culture ministries of the two countries.

“The theatre is a medium that is always connecting people, instead of dividing them. Even though oftentimes we share different views, I believe the play will enable us to find common foundations of the story we’re telling,” director Glomb stated.

Playwright Zagorka Pop Antova Andonovska called the project “extremely important, an important co-production between the two countries that are directly involved in the story of Macedonian child refugees.”

Moreover, Minister Kanceska-Milevska attended a rehearsal of Mikhail Bulgakov’s play The Master and Margarita. It will be premiered in mid-October.

“Excellent results have been achieved since opening the new building of the Macedonian National Theatre almost 18 months ago with sold-out shows, 350 plays and eleven premieres,” she noted.
