Gruevski presents Macedonia's efforts for EU integration progress at EPP summit

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski took part Thursday in the regular summit of the European People’s Party (EPP), which brought together centre-right party presidents and political leaders, including the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission - Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker.

The summit, hosted by EPP President Joseph Daul, was also attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, Portugal's Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban, as well as French and Slovenia opposition leaders Nikolas Sarkozy and Janez Jansa respectively.

PM Gruevski at the summit of the largest political party in Europe met with members of the European political elite attending the event to discuss the latest developments in Macedonia and inform them about the steps made by the Macedonian government to settle the political crisis, MIA reports from Brussels.

“The (EPP summit) was an excellent opportunity for me to meet with guests and informally talk with them about Macedonia and the current political crisis and our efforts made to solve this crisis. The government has immediately accepted the recommendations of the European Commission in connection to implementing further reforms and improving standards in several areas, most notably in the areas covered in chapters 23 and 24. Our plan is to implement them with a heightened dynamics”.

Presenting both sides – that of the government and of the opposition -  Gruevski informed his interlocutors about the government’s plans ‘to do its best in an effort to settle the situation as soon as possible.”

“I’ve asked my interlocutors for their support for Macedonia in order not to be left out, i.e. Macedonia to be included in future discussions regarding EU enlargement,” the PM stressed.

According to him, two topics of discussion dominated the summit – the financial crisis in Greece and Athens-Brussels negotiations as well as the issues with immigrants coming to Europe from Africa and the Middle East.

EC President Jean-Claude Juncker, Gruevski said, has prepared a plan to solve this issue envisaging quotas for accepting immigrants, which was met with scepticism by some.

Participants in the EPP summit have concluded that the immigration issue cannot be resolved within the national borders of a country, according to Premier Gruevski, who urged Europe to adopt a common policy on the matter
