Macedonia marks 143 years of Goce Delcev's birth

Representatives of state institutions, political parties, municipalities and civic organisations laid Wednesday fresh flowers on the grave of Macedonian revolutionary Goce Delcev to honour the 143rd anniversary from his birth. Parliament and Government delegations were led by Vice President Antonio Pesevski and Deputy PM Vladimir Pesevski.

Flowers were also laid on Delcev’s monuments at Macedonia Square and City Park.

Goce Delcev studied in Solun (Thessaloniki) and in the military academy in Sofia, before beginning a career as teacher in Stip, where he became the leading organizer of the VMRO (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization), fighting for Macedonian independence from then Ottoman Turkey.

Betrayed by an informant infiltrated in the VMRO, he was killed in a fight with the Turkish army unit on May 4th 1903, in the village of Banica. His grave is in the St. Spas church in Skopje.
