Press Statement by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev: We can show the world that citizens of the Republic of Macedonia are strongly united in support of their strategic interests

Dear Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Matthew Palmer,

Dear citizens, Dear representatives of the media,

The meeting with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Matthew Palmer, takes place at an exceptionally important period for the Republic of Macedonia, i.e. only after a few days following the great step forward taken by the Parliament last Friday leading the country towards its future.

In our talks with Mr. Palmer, we have agreed that the decision taken by the 80 Members of Parliament is of historic significance. The decision taken by MPs of the ruling coalition and of the opposition to open the pathway to adopting constitutional amendments with a view to implementing the Prespa Agreement has once again reaffirmed the commitment to our Euro-Atlantic future.

The MPs and the democratic forces in our country have courageously taken upon themselves to act responsibly; they have made history and have thus prevented the threat of the Republic of Macedonia falling in the dark pit of the past. They have prevented the risk of a new isolation of our country, which had it happened, would have had disastrous ramifications for our country.

Instead, the brave and responsible representatives, elected by the people, by giving their vote in favor, to the satisfaction of all citizens in our country, have proven the readiness to accomplish the vision of Macedonia becoming a NATO member and that of starting EU accession negotiations.

The values of these alliances are our values as well, and such values have no other alternative.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The votes of the MPs are also votes against new political crises.

The world has seen and recognized this. All our allies, including the United States of America, have welcomed the demonstrated statesman becoming a responsibility of the MPs.

The decision of the MPs encourages us to write the next page of a prosperous future for our country. Let us write the next pages of our history by political reconciliation, forgiving and by standing united.

We need this more than ever.

I am strongly confident that we can show the world that citizens of the Republic of Macedonia are embarking upon a period in which they stand strongly united in support of their strategic interests.

Now is the time to prove to ourselves as well that we are a responsible society that is able to put the past burdened with divisions behind us.

The process of reconciliation and unifying has started at the Parliament. Let us give this process a chance to encompass all areas affected by divisions. Let us do this for the good of our country.

Thank you.
