Government earmarks one-time assistance of EUR 500 to flood affected families in Tetovo

Macedonia's Government has decided Tuesday to grant a financial assistance of MKD 30.000 (about EUR 500) to families that suffered most serious damages from yesterday's floods in Tetovo.

It has also decided for a special commission to be set up to assess the damage of properties on the ground.

The brief but intense storm on Monday caused flash floods in several cities, with Tetovo being the worst affected. Four persons were killed in the flooding. The extent of the damage is still being assessed but at least a dozen houses in Tetovo were damaged and streets were under water. Mudslides have engulfed local roads and cut off a number of mountainous villages around the town.

The Confiscated Property Management Agency will also join the relief efforts and offer clothes, various equipment and anything else that may be useful to the families in need, Vice-Premier for Economic Affairs Vladimir Pesevski told reporters on Tuesday. Special bank account will be also open for donations, he said. Furthermore, a body for coordination the flood relief activities will be also set up.

The municipality of Tetovo will declare August 5-6 for days of mourning, city Mayor Teuta Arifi said. Yesterday's storm has been of the worst in Tetovo for the last 30 years, Arifi said.

The City of Skopje, municipalities Chair, Strumica and Veles have already sent assistance to Tetovo.
